and success stories to be turned-in by February 1,
2005. These are very useful at the state and
federal levels.
Action:
Reports should be sent on paper, diskette or CD to
Keryn Page by February 1.

Item: Black History Month
Discussion:
Nominations for the Division's nominee for
recognition during Black History Month are now
being received. The selection criterion is positive
advancement of diversity on campus and within the
university community.
Action:
Nominations should be sent to Bob Williams by
Thursday, January 13, 2005.
Agenda
Item: Honorary Doctoral Degree
Nominations
Discussion:
Nominations for honorary doctoral degree to be
awarded by MSU next spring are now being accepted.
After a discussion it was agreed that MSU-ES and
CVM would jointly nominate Morgan
Freeman.
Action:
MSU-ES and CVM will jointly complete the necessary
paperwork to nominate Mr. Freeman. The nominations
should be sent to the Honorary Degree Committee in
care of the office of the Provost by February 1,
2005.
Topic:
FY2006 Budget
Discussion:
LBO recommendations for the four separately
budgeted units show a substantial reduction versus
the current fiscal year. For total state funding,
the prepared LBO recommendations are as
follows:
|
|
MSU-ES:
7.6%
|
MAFES:
8.4%
|
|
|
|
FWRC:
8.41%
|
CVM:
13.75%
|
|
The
process is far from over and we probably will not
know the exact level of state funding until early
April.
Action:
None
Topic:
New Faculty Trip
Discussion:
A trip for new faculty will occur again this year.
The trip will originate at MSU and most likely
conclude in the Delta. Additional details will be
provided later.
Action:
None
Topic:
Doctoral Degrees Awarded
Discussion:
In recent years the number of doctoral degrees
awarded at MSU has declined, bringing a reason for
concern. While money factors may have caused this
decline, it is important we identify all the major
factors. In '99-'00, MSU awarded 128 doctoral
degrees. In '03-'04, MSU awarded 85 doctoral
degrees. Declines have been substantial in CALS
while CFR and CVM have been more stable.
Action:
Deans should determine the most affected areas and
the reasons why. Reports should be given to their
vice president.
Topic:
Performance Appraisals of Professional Support
Staff
Discussion:
The performance appraisal forms received from Dr.
Lee were distributed and discussed. Completed
original forms are due in Human Resources by March
1. Training will be conducted by Human Resources to
discuss the performance appraisal process. The
sessions will be held in McArthur Hall on January
20, 25, 26 and 27. Please contact Human Resources
for additional information. The forms used in the
Division can still be used for Extension and
Research Associates.
Action:
Deans/Directors need to make sure their department
heads/center heads and other unit leaders are fully
aware of this process and the March 1
deadline.
Topic:
Day at the Capital Rotunda
Discussion:
On January 18, 2005 all IHL universities are
invited to the capital rotunda to interact with the
legislature and our elite state officials. Each
university will need to emphasize the services it
provides to the citizens of the state of
Mississippi. Emphasis should not only be on
academic programs but focus on services to the
citizens, research programs, contributions, general
welfare, and economic growth rate.
Action:
Your thoughts and suggestions should be
communicated immediately to either Bob Williams or
Joe Farris.
Topic:
Routing Form
Discussion:
A prepared routing form from the offices of
Diversity and Equity Programs was distributed and
discussed. The form is in the early review stage
and suggested changes are appropriate.
Action:
Suggested changes should be sent to the vice
presidents by January 21, 2005.
Topic:
Visual ID Standards
Discussion:
Materials on MSU Visual Identity standards were
distributed and discussed. The latest revision in
2003 explains and shows the correct way to visually
identify the university. Numerous examples are
given in the materials about how to correctly use
the seal and the word mark.
Action:
Deans/Directors need to make sure all unit leaders
are aware of and have copies of the current
standards.
Topic:
Construction Projects Update
Discussion:
The process to construct a 6,000 sq. ft. addition
to the North Mississippi Research and Extension
Center is moving forward. Included on the January
IHL Board agenda is an item to approve the
construction documents for the addition. Following
IHL and BOB approval, the bid process will occur.
Construction should begin in late spring or early
summer.
We
have also been notified that we will receive an
additional $1.85 million from HUD for renovations
of Lloyd-Ricks. This brings our total renovation
money for Lloyd-Ricks to $2.85 million. Additional
dollars will be sought and preliminary plans are
currently being developed relative to the use of
this money.
Action:
A meeting with Tim Muzzi and others at the Physical
Plant is scheduled for Friday, January 14, 2005 to
receive additional input about the Lloyd-Ricks
project. The necessary paperwork for the HUD money
is currently being completed.
Topic:
Cell phones
Discussion:
The process of reducing the number of cell phones
on the MSU inventory and total cell phones in the
Division continues to move toward completion. The
worksheet that shows the Division's inventory and
status of cell phones was distributed and revised.
For those turning phones in, January 31 - February
3 in the lobby of McArthur Hall is the selected
time and location. Off-campus turn-in sites and
dates may be set following the on-campus activity.
Some discussion about a $29.95 in-state plan is
currently occurring and may be beneficial to some
units in the Division.
Action:
Deans/Directors should review the cell phone
worksheet and continue to make corrections as
necessary. Dr. Mixon continues to coordinate this
effort for the Division.
Other
Items:
- The
MSU/Farm Bureau reception for the MS Legislature
is scheduled for Tuesday, February 8, 2005 in
Jackson.
