Agenda Item:  Faculty Mentoring

Discussion:  The faculty mentoring program continues to progress at an appropriate pace. The next activity is planned for October 12 in the Bost Conference Center.  The discussion topic is “Preparing for Tenure & Promotion” with Drs. Peter Rabideau, George Hopper, Linda Pote, Peter Ryan and Scott Willard making comments. The topic for the November 9 meeting is “Where’s the Outside Money.” The December 14 meeting will be a Department Heads Round Table.

Action:  Continue to encourage your new and other appropriate faculty to participate.

Agenda Item:  Building Updates

Discussion:  A number of building projects are currently underway.  The following is a brief update:

  • ABE:  A new $9.5 million facility will be built on the “Old Tin Gym” site.  The suggested bid date is December 7, 2005. The Bureau of Buildings will make the final decision relative to the bid date and will handle the entire process.
  • North MS Research & Extension Center Expansion:  A $960,000 expansion is underway with utilities moved and dirt work completed. Plumbing and draining is currently being done.  The scheduled completion date is May 8, 2006.
  • Pace Seed Lab:  The contractor will submit the estimates, from the tornado damage, to his insurance company within the next 10 days. A response from the insurance company should occur within 30 days.  After the repair work begins, it may take as long as 10 months to finish, which would put the completion date in late summer/fall of 2006.
  • CVM Diagnostic Lab at Whitfield:  The $18 million project is scheduled for completion on October 24, 2005.  Due to several delays, the project may not be completed until late 2005.  The dedication will most likely occur prior to April, 1, 2006.

Action:  None

Agenda Item:  Outstanding Worker Awards

Discussion:  Outstanding worker awards will be presented to MAFES and MSU-ES employees at an Awards Luncheon on November 15, 2005. Nominations are due in the VP’s office no later than October 15. The awards are again being sponsored by the Federal Land Bank Association of North Mississippi and the Federal Land Bank Association of South Mississippi.

Action:   As you interact with personnel from these two associations, please thank them for their support.

Agenda Item:  Alumni Fellows

Discussion:  The Alumni Fellows program will be held on campus on November 10 and 11.  The three fellows in the division are Gerald Moore, CFR; Jimmy Webb, CVM ; and James Smith, CALS. These men are some of our most outstanding alumni in the division.  A group meeting of the three fellows and division administration will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 11.

Action:  None

Other Items:

  • John Tomlinson gave a brief update on the current budget situation and prospects for next year. The probability of a budget rescission this year appears to be low.  Through September the general fund was only $6 million below the budgeted amount.  Based on recent comments from the State Economist, revenues collected should be high enough to cover the budget even with the disruptions caused by the hurricanes.  As we prepare for the 2006 legislative session, we need to begin asking our friends and supporters for their help.  These requests should be coordinated through John Tomlinson and Dr. Vance Watson.

  • George Hopper spoke about the need for equity raises for a number of faculty in the CFR & FWRC.  At the Assistant Professor level, we are somewhat competitive. However, at the Associate Professor and Professor levels, we are substantially below the Southern University Group averages in some division units.  Addressing this issue will certainly be one of our challenges in the next 3-4 years.

  • The new monthly meeting with Department/Center Heads seems to be working well.  Department Heads and other CVM administration will be invited to become a part of these meetings.

DAFVM Events:

  • Sept. 17:  Scarecrow Trail, NMREC
  • Oct. 14-15:  Fall Flower and Garden Fest, Crystal Springs
  • Oct. 22:  CALS Alumni Breakfast (Homecoming weekend)
