Edicarlos Batista de Castro is an Extension Associate in the MSU Department of Plant and Soil Sciences specializing in program planning, conducting scientific studies, communicating results, and locating and acquiring funding. He assists in the oversight of undergraduate student projects, and he teaches as well.

“Since my childhood in Tres Pontas in the Minas Gerais state in Brazil, I helped my parents in jobs related to agriculture,” Edicarlos said. “This made me want to work with plants and be able to contribute to the development of agriculture.”

He would like people to understand that Extension has an important role in society. As an Extension Associate, he works hard to deliver vital results and information from research to help society.

“A great place to start if a student is interested in this career is to be a student worker and complete an internship in different areas to discover where your passion is,” Edicarlos said. “Ultimately, it is essential to create goals for the coming years.”

He explained that in order to be successful in this career, an individual needs to be persistent and proactive, work well alone and in a team and be open to new opinions and to adapt to different environments. 

Edicarlos said his wife and family have always been the foundation for his success. His father and mother are his inspiration and they show him it is possible to achieve great things with effort.
