Laboratory Technologist
Mississippi Veterinary Research and Diagnostic Laboratory
Time in position: 2 years
Time of Service to MSU: 5 years

Sean Martin’s journey to veterinary medicine began with a childhood dream that has guided his entire career path. After earning his degree in Animal and Dairy Sciences from Mississippi State University, Martin spent three years as an assistant herdsman at the MSU Bearden Dairy Research Center.

“At the dairy, I was able to tend and care for animals, but I wanted to do more,” Martin said.

That desire to expand his impact led him to his current role as a laboratory technologist with the Mississippi Veterinary Research and Diagnostic Laboratory, an extension of the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine.

In his position, Martin combines his agricultural background with scientific expertise to perform critical veterinary research and diagnostic testing. His primary focus involves isolating and identifying pathogenic bacteria from animal samples, then analyzing these organisms to determine their antibiotic resistance or sensitivity profiles. This detailed analysis provides veterinarians with essential information to determine the most effective treatment protocols for their patients.

“My goal is to get a patient's sample analyzed efficiently and effectively so that they can be closer to recovery. The best part of my job is that I can help make a difference for the animals," Martin said.

Beyond his technical expertise, Martin has become an integral part of the laboratory's collaborative culture. One of his favorite memories from his time at MSU involved participating in a workplace costume contest for the first time as an adult.

“It was great being able to network and talk with them outside of a professional standpoint. I was able to form better working relationships from it,” Martin said.

When he’s not in the laboratory, Martin enjoys time with his wife, Brooke, and their three-year-old daughter, Snow. They enjoy family outings like visiting the zoo, swimming, and going to local parks.
