Katrina McCalphia
Extension Agent IV
Newton County
Years in Position/Service to MSU: 30 years
Thirty years ago, Katrina McCalphia joined Mississippi State University Extension to provide stability for her family. What she found was a lifelong calling as an MSU Extension Agent. She stayed because the work gave her opportunities to serve others while continuing to grow personally and professionally.
"It is mind-blowing to think that one decision to support my family has repeatedly brought me growth and opportunities," McCalphia said.
In her role, McCalphia provides youth with educational experiences that help them build valuable skills. She also equips families with resources on financial literacy, health and wellness, and other important topics.
One of her most impactful programs is a real-world financial exercise she implements with high school students in partnership with local schools. Students are assigned an occupation with a corresponding salary based on education level, helping them understand how career choices affect earning potential. Through stations—housing, utilities, groceries, childcare, communication, entertainment, transportation, and giving back to charity—they learn the true costs of adult life, including the expenses of raising children.
"It's all about choices, making sure they understand the importance of making positive choices in life," McCalphia explained. "I've had students tell me, 'I'm going to go home and hug my parents because I didn't know all they had to do to take care of me.'"
Beyond financial literacy, McCalphia works with local schools on critical issues like bullying and suicide prevention, addressing the challenges young people face today.
"I want to make sure MSU Extension is a viable organization within the county," she explained. "That's why I create opportunities for Extension to connect with the community."
After decades of service, McCalphia has witnessed firsthand the impact of Extension programs. Among her fondest memories is watching 4-H members grow into adult volunteers who come back to serve.
"It is a testament to how impactful being involved with Extension can be on individuals and families," she said.
McCalphia continues to mentor new agents while bringing knowledge and resources to youth, families, and communities. She is proud to be a change agent, helping shape lives for the better.
Outside of work, she enjoys traveling, especially on cruises, where she can relax and recharge with her family.
