Years in Position/Service to MSU: 1.5 years

At Mississippi State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, the work of protecting animal health begins long before a diagnosis is made, and for Sample Receiving Technician Courtney Storey, it starts the moment a specimen arrives at the door.

What Storey didn't know as an MSU undergraduate was that her part-time student worker position at the College's diagnostic laboratory would become the foundation of her career.

"It felt like every day I discovered a growing passion for the work and the impact it has on animal health," Storey said.

When a full-time position opened after graduation, she applied without hesitation. Nearly two years later, she continues to dedicate herself to learning, growing, and taking pride in being part of a lab that makes a difference.

In her role, Storey manages the accurate intake, verification and documentation of incoming specimens, ensuring each one is handled in compliance with established protocols and quality standards—work that demands both precision and consistency. She also serves as a primary point of contact for the lab, greeting clients, fielding phone inquiries and maintaining a welcoming environment.

Among her responsibilities, Storey also assists with the intake process for animal cremation services.

"During sensitive circumstances, it is my goal to provide compassionate and respectful support to clients," she said. "I strive to communicate clearly and professionally to ensure clients are informed and supported throughout the process."

It is not always easy work. But Storey finds fulfillment knowing that what she does each day contributes to the health and well-being of animals.

"It is incredibly rewarding to know that my efforts help make a real difference in the lives of animals," she said. "That sense of purpose brings me genuine joy every day."

The culture inside the lab adds to that fulfillment. Some of Storey's favorite memories come from the holidays, when her team shares food, laughter and fellowship that comes from caring about the people you work alongside.

"We work well together, but knowing we care for and support one another outside of the lab makes every day more meaningful," she said.

Looking ahead, Storey is eager to keep growing, both within the laboratory and across the broader university.

"I look forward to continuing my professional growth within the laboratory, as well as further developing my career and contributions here at Mississippi State University," she said.

Outside of the lab, she enjoys spending time with her fiancé and their two dogs. Her fiancé is active on campus, working with the radio station and teaching multiple classes. Together, they spend much of their free time planning their upcoming wedding, which she describes as “an exciting and rewarding experience.”
