Alexis Jones
Floater Assistant Teacher
East Biloxi Head Start
Years in position: 1.3
Years of service to MSU: 2
Alexis Jones goes with the flow—quite literally. As a floater assistant teacher at East Biloxi Head Start, she works with 3- and 4-year-olds, transitioning between classrooms to assist wherever needed. Through the MSU Extension Service, Head Start provides research-based education to prepare children for preschool and kindergarten.
For Jones, the most rewarding part of her job is building relationships with the children she works with and being there to provide care, support, and encouragement. Although some might find the constant movement between classrooms and children overwhelming, Jones embraces it with enthusiasm.
“There is nothing quite as heartwarming as having tiny humans run up and hug you out of the blue,” Jones said.
The decision to become an assistant teacher came naturally to Jones, who is passionate about helping children learn and feel loved.
“I love seeing their faces light up when they learn something new,” she said. “It’s such a rewarding feeling.”
Jones' approach to teaching involves more than simply guiding the children through lessons. She actively engages in activities with them, making learning fun and interactive. Whether it's reading a story, playing a game, or assisting with a craft project, Jones is always hands-on, ensuring every child is engaged.

Being a floater has its challenges, but Jones thrives on the variety it offers. Each day brings new learning dynamics and opportunities to make a difference.
"I’m just a mom doing my best to help raise 20 little ones every day,” Jones said with a laugh.
