Animal Health Technician
College of Veterinary Medicine
Years in position/at MSU: 5
Asha Bolton, an ophthalmology veterinary technician at the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine, took an unconventional path to her current role. With a background in fine arts and a master’s degree in painting, Bolton’s interest in ophthalmology grew from her fascination with eyes—a detail she often focused on in her artwork.
“I never expected to be working in ophthalmology, but I wouldn’t change it for anything,” Bolton said.
Today, Bolton applies her precision and attention to detail in a much different setting, assisting veterinarians in providing specialized eye care for animals. Her role involves a wide range of responsibilities, including helping with ocular exams, diagnostic testing, sedation, and maintaining ophthalmic equipment. She also works closely with students and clients, teaching techniques and sharing knowledge to improve patient outcomes.
“Seeing my patients’ quality of life improve is the best reward I could ask for,” Bolton said.
Bolton became a veterinary technician because of her desire to help others—both animals and their owners. One memory stands out from early in her career—a patient named Sweetie Pie. The small dog, who suffered from cataracts, underwent surgery to restore her vision.
“She suffered from cataracts and came to us for surgery. It was an honor to help her gain her vision again,” Bolton recalled.
Sweetie Pie’s owner, an elderly gentleman, left a lasting impression on Bolton. His devotion to Sweetie Pie was evident—not only through his constant companionship but also in the hats and clothing he wore with her name on them. After the surgery, their emotional bond moved Bolton deeply.
“They only had each other,” she said, describing the heartfelt moment when Sweetie Pie was discharged.
For Bolton, the joy of her work extends beyond her patients. She’s grateful to be part of a supportive and hardworking team.
“Having good colleagues is one thing, but being able to call them great friends is even better,” she said.
Outside of work, Bolton enjoys painting pets, combining her two greatest passions—art and animals.
“I feel so lucky to do what I love every day,” Bolton said.
